Mobile Data Growing Unevenly

JULY 19, 2007

Only 5% of US mobile device owners watch video clips on their handhelds, according to a study by Interpublic Group’s Initiative conducted in April 2007.

Under a fifth of respondents used them to check e-mail, access the Internet or download games.

Those numbers are up from a year ago, when 16% of respondents downloaded a game and 15% accessed the Internet or e-mail.

Mobile music usage doubled to 16% from a year ago.

Carriers are trying to grow revenues with applications besides
voice and text messaging, but users still mainly talk and text on their
phones. Nearly half of the respondents said they sent and received text
messages, up from 40% a year ago.
